Big Mike Finds Gold in the Nevada Desert

My good friend and fellow martial artist Mike Gates has just taken gold in the old mans division at the 2015 IBJJF World Masters Tournament in Las Vegas Nevada!  Winning the gold with style by choking out his opponent in the final seconds of the final match.
Mike is the epitome of why you do not want to lose the top position... just think, a few years ago this guy did not even know what grappling was.  Come a long way my friend.  Proud of you.
Big Mike is a student of Marcos Santos, representing the RCJ Machado brethren of Dallas Ft. Worth.

Prof Machado in Jiu Jitsu Style

Our fearless leader Prof. Carlos Machado once again spits some wisdom in his monthly column "Machado Talks" in issue #23 of Jiu Jitsu Style.  That is one of the many things I love about this family...not only can they walk the walk, they are intelligent, educated, and wise beyond their years; most likely a testament to amazing parents IMHO.

If you get the chance try to catch one of the five brothers on the mat for sure (check out RCJ Machado for seminar info), and on your way to class swing by a bookstore and grab issue 23 of Jiu Jitsu Style, the best mag in our business!

2014 RCJ Machado Brothers Camp A Huge Success

What a great weekend spent training under THE best family in martial arts, alongside amazing training partners in DFW!  Too much info to sift through right now but I can honestly say everything from Rigan's handcuff series, to John's quick reminder to remember the fundamentals that this system was built upon; SELF DEFENSE, the 2014 camp is arguably the best one yet.

A quick shout out to NWJJA Seattle and Maple Ridge.  I appreciate my training partners.
I also want to thank my coach Brian Johnson for his time, effort and guidance.
EVERYONE owes Lindsay Machado a HUGE thank you and hug, for without her ... no camp.  Period.
Lastly but certainly not least I want to send my love and gratitude to Carlos, Roger, Rigan, and John for their unbiased sharing and teaching of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Truly an inspiration for me both on and off the mat.

Rigan and Team Nexus

John Machado...sign behind us says it all!

Carlos The Wise
Roger the firefighter
I am already looking forward to 2015's camp, which from what a little birdie told me will most likely be in a different city!

2014 RCJ Machado 5 Brothers Camp Day 1

NWJJA has arrived and the 2014 RCJ Machado 5 Brothers Camp is underway!  Practitioners from Mexico, Canada, and all over the US have flown in to train with the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Family on earth.  As with every year Prof. Carlos Machado started off the festivities offering the his latest findings in his infamous hook sweep game.  A teacher beyond compare whose conceptual learning method I find the most symbiotic with my frantic learning style.  The three hours on the mat went by in no time.  And speaking of which... we are down to the last 7 days to register for Carlos Machado's seminar November 1st in Seattle, WA.

This evening we have John Machado, with Roger and Rigan tomorrow followed by a feast for warriors at Fogo de Chao!!!!

Carlos Machado All Over the BJJ Globe

Professor Carlos Machado has been all over the place as of late with a featured column in the latest Jiu Jitsu Style magazine where he speaks about tournament fighting and the importance of points in our training.  Check out page 51 for the entire article.  The really great news is the Barnes & Noble at Northgate in Seattle has started carrying Jiu Jitsu Style in lieu of Gracie magazine!  So please go support them and sell Jiu Jitsu Style out every month!!!

Carlos will also be one of the featured instructors at the RCJ Machado Five Brothers Camp Oct. 24-26 2014 in Dallas Texas.  Join us where Carlos will share the mat with his four brothers (three of which are red-black belts!!) and be teaching some of the most technically sound Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you will ever see.

And as if that was not enough Carlos Machado will then be visiting the Emerald City for the very first time where he will teach a BJJ seminar on November 1st 2014 at the NW Jiu Jitsu Academy.  All ranks and affiliations are welcome to join us for Prof. Machado's first visit to the Pacific NW!  More info coming...

BJJ Brick Interviews Carlos Machado

Our mentor and friend Professor Carlos Machado is the featured guest on BJJ Brick, a great new podcast to the grappling community.  A wonderful interview with insights from someone who has been on the mat ALL his life.

What I love about listening to someone like Carlos is that no matter how many interviews I listen to of his, there is ALWAYS something new he has to offer the conversation regardless of topic.  I have never learned so much from a teacher so far away.

Check out the interview by clicking here.

Enjoy!

Carlos Machado Interview

Here is a great short interview with Red black belt Carlos Machado of RCJ Machado fame, where he discusses the role of women in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Tracey Vandry.  In a time of misogynistic attitudes and approaches even in our martial arts, it is nice to see an advocate for equality on the mats especially from a Brazilian leader such as Carlos.

Here is a snippet, to read the entire article click here.

"Since BJJ has become more popular, and its' benefits are apparent to the female public, it started a great demand. I know in the past in Brazil women were not encouraged to practice BJJ because of the exclusive point of view that BJJ was predominantly a male sport. Once people realized that this was not necessarily the case, and for self-defense reasons, women could benefit tremendously from BJJ, the barriers were gradually broken. Today, more and more women join BJJ schools. It is a healthy, safe, exciting and effective self-defense method for men and women alike."
