Carlos Machado is EVERYWHERE!!!!

I get home from over 15 hours of mat time with the most amazing family in grappling and what do I find in the mail.....

Prof. Carlos Machado is literally everywhere!  I just saw him in his hometown of Dallas, we will be hosting him this weekend here in Seattle for a seminar, and he has an article in the latest issue of Jiu Jitsu Style!  Read what Carlos has to offer at your local B&N or subscribe electronically, then swing on by NWJJA to register for this landmark seminar Saturday November 1st where Carlos Machado will make his first trip to the Pacific NW to offer some tips on making our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu better.  This will be the third red-black belt we have hosted at NWJJA, and the fourth Machado brother.

Then literally the weekend after (Nov 1st) we will be hosting Carlos Machado here in Seattle, WA. for his first seminar in the Pacific NW!  Over 18 hours of grappling in 7 days with 5 of the best in 2 of America's most vibrant cities.  That is 1 hell of an opportunity not to be missed!

Brian Johnson Featured on Jiu Jitsu Olympics Blog

Jared Loper over at the blog Jiu Jitsu Olympics stopped into NW Jiu Jitsu Academy the other night and wrote up a short review of our academy and coach Brian J. Johnson.  A blue belt from Idaho, Jared was kind enough to drop in on his visit to Seattle which is always the case with out of town guests as all are welcome to our dojo.

"Some great competitors struggle with teaching. Brian is not one of those people. He explains complex techniques very simply, and his students reflect his skills and abilities."  Click here to read the entire review.

Positional Studies with BJJ Scout - Bicep Ride

Scout has been down and out with an injury, but he is back with a vengeance including his latest venture... a series of breakdowns on Positional Studies, the most recent being 'Bicep Ride.'  As always BJJ Scout breaks down grappling into bite sized morsels that are easy for us to chew regardless of rank and experience.  The more experience one has the more they can digest.

You will also notice a nice little shout out at the beginning (10 second mark) of the video for Brian Johnson's "B-12 BJJ Curriculum" so please do us a favor and help spread the word via Scout's video. Not so coincidentally many of the principles Scout is breaking down are taught in Brian's fundamental curriculum!

John B. Will will be making his annual pilgrimage to the Emerald City on Sunday June 22nd to offer glimpses of his genius in both gi and no gi grappling.  As most of my readers know John Will has been Brian's coach for well over a dozen trips around the sun, and he takes a weekend of his year to visit with us each rotation.  One of the Dirty Dozen (first twelve non-Brazilian black belts), Australia's first BJJ black belt, and one of the most sought after coaches, join John Will at the NW Jiu Jitsu Academy for a day of training. Womens Day Out 2014 - Puyallup WA.

Do you suffer from PTSD due to an assault or traumatic event? Are you tired of being hushed and medicated?  Then join  NWJJA's very own black belt Denise Holcomb this weekend, along with a cadre of women instructors from the Pacific NW as they raise awareness and money for Women's Day Out 2014, Saturday May 3rd.

Unfortunately cases of sexual assault are rising in our society, both inside and out of the military, and this event is an attempt to raise awareness to PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and MSA (military sexual assault).  Both fitness and martial art / self defense seminars will be taught along with a forum and opportunity to get support and find help if you have suffered from psychological/emotional/physical pain via assault or other traumatic event.

Click here to be re-directed to the Womens Day Out site.  Or you can contact Maria Dill 253-632-5085  Suggested donations are only $10 with the proceeds benefiting the American Lake Women's PTSD Program, and women veterans are welcome to attend free of charge.

Denise Holcomb at the 2013 Masters Worlds
Denise Holcomb, one of the instructors of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu sessions, is a black belt under Brian J. Johnson whom she has been loyally training with since her martial journey began over 12 years ago.  She is a seasoned teacher as well as being the silver medalist in the 2013 Masters / Seniors Black Belt lightweight division where she held her own with girls 15 years her younger!

For those of you whom may have missed the live interview Sunday night, or if anyone wants to listen to it again, our very own NWJJA's Brian J. Don't miss this interview where Brian gives props to the Machado family, talks about starting a BJJ business from grass roots, offers some info on the charity needs of www.osostrong.org and discusses the complexities of competition...

Chris "Spider" Webb Takes Bronze

Yesterday NWJJA's very own Chris "Spider" Webb rode into Phoenix Arizona swung his sword of justice and collected some new heads for the mantle at home taking bronze at the NABJJF Grand Canyon State Open.  Fighting three fights and winning two in the purple belt medium heavy, Chris said he was "very pleased with his performance" so therefore decided to pass on the absolute division (which he qualified for) to spend more time with his folks.

No tougher an opponent, no bigger a heart.  Congrats brother, proud of you!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Seattle, Washington

I wanted to take the opportunity to let potential students of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) know that you have several choices in Seattle, WA.  There are many excellent instructors of grappling that offer a bevy of classes throughout the Seattle metropolitan area, and it has come to my attention that a certain school is advertising proclamations such as being "...Seattle's only school that teaches Brazilian Jiu Jitsu exclusively."   An assertion that quite simply is not true, and when informed about the typo the individual decided to leave the statement be.

So buyer beware when shopping for BJJ in the Seattle area, make sure you check out a bevy of schools including Fosters BJJ, SIMA in W. Seattle, and the best in the northwest: NW Jiu Jitsu Academy in North Seattle!  And if it applies make sure to inquire why certain instructors are making false or misleading claims in their advertising campaigns for no real good reason.

NWJJA: Belt Promotions January 16, 2014

A huge night for Brian Johnson and his NW Jiu Jitsu Academy in north Seattle, WA. as we promoted no less than 10 martial artists.  I will write up more on my own personal journey through purple belt soon, but I wanted to take the moment to recognize the hard work and dedication of our grapplers at the premier BJJ gym in the Pacific Northwest.

Big Ben was the sole soul awarded blue belt last night.  But we had a bevy of new purples including Brett Smith, Coach Bo, David C., Ivan Moran, and Joseph Montagne.  Mike, Justin Guyer, Nick, and myself were awarded our brown belts on January 16, 2014.

Congrats to all on the well deserved promotions.  Welcome back to the bottom of the totem poll, now get your ass back on the mat and train!

Brian Johnson's "Entangled Arm" DVD Sneak Peak

Stay tuned to The Ground Never Misses for the release of "Entangled Arm" in the near future, until then make sure your fundamentals are sound with the B12 DVD Series and check out this preview of things to come:

Ivan Moran - Bronze at the NABJJF Worlds

Congrats to my hermano y mano (I am semi-sure that is "brother in arms" in Russian;), Ivan Moran who took bronze at the NABJJF Worlds yesterday!  I wish I could post the video but it is only on Facebook, but Ivan fought a hard fight (against a Machado affiliate himself) and ended up taking bronze in the blue belt heavy division.

Congrats bro!  See you on the mat next week.
