2015 Carlos Machado Seattle Seminar

We are very fortunate to have Red-black belt Professor Carlos Machado visit the Pacific NW once again on November 1st, 2015 for a four hour intensive seminar from 12-4pm!  If you have never had the privilege to train with Carlos then do yourself a favor a give yourself an early X Mas gift.  His grasp of the fundamentals... what can I say... he has forgotten more Jiu Jitsu than most of us will ever know!
Come experience what over 40 years on the mat can offer you.  Visit the NW Jiu Jitsu Academy (941 N. 95th St Seattle, WA.) for more information or to register ASAP, as space is limited and this will sell out.

Nine Year Itch

09 No Gi Worlds L-R: Dave Meyer / BJJ / JAB
Nine years ago on today's date I started my formal Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training under Brian Johnson at the NW Jiu Jitsu Academy.  I am grateful he accepted my big goofy ass as a student, and it would be the understatement of the decade to say I have learned countless lessons both on and off the mat from Brian.  For that I am thankful.  I look forward to nine more years sharing the mat!

Support our fellow brother in arms by bookmarking the Ground Technician and "Like" him on Facefuck and Twitter.

Jean Jacques Machado Seminar - November 16-17th - Seattle, WA.

Just a friendly reminder that we are about 10 days away from hosting the grappling legend Jean Jacques Machado for his very first visit to the Pacific Northwest.  Our gi seminar is just about sold out, but we do have spots open for the no gi on Sunday.   Not only is JJM a technical wizard, but he is one hell of a nice guy!  Come be a part of history and train with one of BJJ's most decorated competitors.

NWJJA Represents at RCJ Machado 5 Brothers Camp

L-R Top: Jake / Carlos / Rigan / Brian / John / Roger / Jean Jacques
Bottom: Rachel / Kelland / Dario / Ben / Denise / Rick

My brain was flooded with Rigan Trap details as is and then Jean Jacques came along and completely destroyed what little was left, so I apologize that this will be rather short, sweet, and not so articulate.  As I sit here exhausted from 15 hours on the mat with the Machado family at the 2013 RCJ Machado camp, the one thing I can put into written form is my appreciation for the only BJJ school I have ever known; the NW Jiu Jitsu Academy.

Our academy, along with our affiliates from Canada, brought a total of 12 people representing 10% of the total attendance of the camp, and I can only believe that those numbers will grow each subsequent year!  To share in an experience like this is priceless and we had a great crew to travel with.  A huge thanks to my training partner Denise Holcomb who is hands down one of the best partners to work with period let alone at a camp this size.  No one else I would rather watch the Stars with (again next year right?).  Denise, by the by, had the wonderful distinction of being the only female black belt present at the camp!

Also much thanks to Rick Monce, Kelland Lindsey, Ben Wendell, and Rachel Lin for their support, ridicule, and great times.  Also a shout out to our brothers to the north, Canada that is... though they clearly need better taste in hockey teams it seemed like everyone had a blast and worked really well together!  It was great sharing the mat with Perry Bateson and his boys.
Voted two sexiest camp attendees!

A special shout out to my brother from another mother "Big" Mike Gates.  Though he is now a BLUE BELT under Marcos Santos, we at NWJJA consider him our adopted son as he has wiggled his way into every one's hearts!  We love you brother and you know you always have a home away from home with us.

I want to thank each and every one of you for the absolute joy you have brought our coach Brian "Mr. BJJ" Johnson.  Though he may never say it, your attendance and involvement with the RCJ Machado camp means the absolute world to him and each and every one of you made him proud this weekend.  So thank you for making this an amazing event for my friend and coach.  I cannot tell you how happy that makes me.

On that note... to our coach Brian Johnson... bro, what can I say?!  Every moment I am around you, you make me a better person.  It has been too long for one of these road trips!  We differ in many ways, yet compliment each other like blood brothers.  You are an inspiration to me, a friend to me, and I am eternally grateful for your guidance.  I am not sure if your students understand how fortunate they really are, but I do and from the bottom of my heart I thank you.  Thank you for introducing me to a world that has become my lifestyle, literally my life.  Thank you for guiding me to multiple world championships.  Thank you for being there like no one else was when I needed someone most.  My loyalty to you shall never falter.

Before you sign off, if you could quickly fill out the survey to your right.  I am trying to get an idea of what kind of kimono's my readers like.  If you vote "other" please leave a comment on this post as to which ones you like.

Can't wait for next years camp.  See you all on the mat tomorrow night!

Cheers,
Jake

Brian "Mr. BJJ" Johnson Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Seminar

My coach and friend Brian (Mr. BJJ) Johnson will be teaching a seminar at SIMA over in West Seattle October 12, 2013 at 1pm.  It is only $40 and I assure you it will be the best $40 you spend on training.  Brian brings over 20 years of grappling experience to the mat, and as a second degree black belt in BJJ he is one of the most articulate and organized instructors I have ever shared the mat with in any style.

Renzo Gracie always clowning, with Renato Magno chilling!
For those of you unaware, we have a very special guest making a quick pit stop here in Seattle, WA. next month goes by the name John B. Will.  John is Australia's first BJJ black belt, as well as being a member of the "Dirty Dozen" (first 12 non-Brazilian's to attain black belt in BJJ) under the Machado family.  Teaching over 300 seminars a year around the globe, John has become renown for not only his near perfect techniques on the mat, but also his presence while teaching.  It truly is something to experience just how planned, detailed and intricate his instructions are, as well as his control of the room.

If you are still on the fence whether to attend (Click here for more information on the seminar July 14th here in Seattle) I have found some solid examples of John's teaching method for your perusal:

Brett's 15 minutes

Flipping through Jiu Jitsu Magazine the other day, the hawk like eye of our friend Jordan Z. caught a glimpse of the ever so common Brett "Dutchess" Smith armbar!  That's right kids, not to be outdone but our very own Taho "Big Walker" Kakutani, Dutchess' awesome arm bar made the pic's section from the coverage of the UGF Arizona.  Sorry for the low res pic, but you can see Brett in the white gi nailing the submission:

B-12 Basic BJJ Curriculum Making Waves

It's never too late to get some recognition, and Brian Johnson's "B12 Basic BJJ Curriculum" three volume set is getting some rave reviews.  Our friend the Red Menace herself over at Georgette's Jiu Jitsu World FINALLY (JK G;) threw down the review of the whole B12 set:

"Overall, it's a well-made, nice basic curriculum.  I don't think there are many instructionals like it on the market; maybe the White to Blue material from Roy Dean.  I'd say this series is designed for students without an academy (military members overseas, people in rural areas, people in between academies etc), people looking to practice at home who need visual reminders, AND beginning teachers looking for some guidance or role modeling on teaching."
Georgette's review actually is quite fortuitous for us as it comes JUST as our friends over at  Budo Videos have just started carrying the B12 Curriculum and are featuring it in their DVD new releases!
Take advantage of their special running now through Sunday in honor of the Pan Am's and take an additional 15% of using the code "pan2013" and grab the entire set at a steal!

For any of you whom have purchased the curriculum do us a favor and and please leave a review on Budo Videos and/or Amazon by following the links above and leaving a comment.  Also make sure you stay tuned to the Ground Never Misses for the latest news regarding Brian's forthcoming DVD on the "Entangled Arm" which is a unique position to work from closed guard that he has become rather well known for, as seen here with his hooks guard:
