Brian Johnson Featured on Jiu Jitsu Olympics Blog

Jared Loper over at the blog Jiu Jitsu Olympics stopped into NW Jiu Jitsu Academy the other night and wrote up a short review of our academy and coach Brian J. Johnson.  A blue belt from Idaho, Jared was kind enough to drop in on his visit to Seattle which is always the case with out of town guests as all are welcome to our dojo.

"Some great competitors struggle with teaching. Brian is not one of those people. He explains complex techniques very simply, and his students reflect his skills and abilities."  Click here to read the entire review.

Pam & Denise Forever

I am so joyed and happy for my friends Pam & Denise as they invited me to be part of their intimate family on May 17th 2014 where they tied the knot after 17+ years of love and kinship!  I met Denise nearly 8 years ago on the mat at NW Jiu Jitsu where she promptly choked my big goofy ass out.  We soon became friends and without a doubt she is one of the best training partners I have ever had.  Brian's only black belt and most loyal and dedicated student, Denise is the epitome of the principles on which BJJ is built, and standing right next to her the entire way has been her faithful companion in life Pam.  A more lovely couple you will not meet.
Yes, thats correct... she got married in her black belt, cuz that's how we roll!

You will notice I have not used their last name and that is quite intentional as Pam & Denise truly are one love!  I have never met a more wonderful couple and I cannot be happier that the people of the state of Washington finally got their collective heads out of the clouds and legalized the marriage of anyone to anyone.  The fact that we have to legislate these human right's is beyond me but also a topic for another time.  Congrats girlz, and thank you for allowing me to be part of your day!

Love always,
Jake

PS Not that they are hip hop fans, but this track from the Polish Ambassador featuring Mr. Lif and Ayla Nereo is amazingly beautiful and the brilliant lyrics about feeling lost and being found seem apropos:

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Seattle, Washington

I wanted to take the opportunity to let potential students of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) know that you have several choices in Seattle, WA.  There are many excellent instructors of grappling that offer a bevy of classes throughout the Seattle metropolitan area, and it has come to my attention that a certain school is advertising proclamations such as being "...Seattle's only school that teaches Brazilian Jiu Jitsu exclusively."   An assertion that quite simply is not true, and when informed about the typo the individual decided to leave the statement be.

So buyer beware when shopping for BJJ in the Seattle area, make sure you check out a bevy of schools including Fosters BJJ, SIMA in W. Seattle, and the best in the northwest: NW Jiu Jitsu Academy in North Seattle!  And if it applies make sure to inquire why certain instructors are making false or misleading claims in their advertising campaigns for no real good reason.

Jean Jacques Machado: NWJJA Seminar Day 1 In Pictures

This man leaves me speechless every time I hit the mat with him, so I will let the pictures do the talking!  An amazing tactician overshadowed only by a passion to share the art of BJJ, here are a few shots of day one as I head off to the no gi seminar today!

NWJJA's Max McCrackin Takes Gold at the Revolution

Smile Max... you just took gold!
Well readers you asked for more tutorials so I present to you an excellent video of our very own Max McCrackin fighting at last weekends Revolution Tournament.  Max is a student at NW Jiu Jitsu Academy in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Coach Mike Leary, and with me in my stand up combatives class.  A diligent student and hard worker, this was Max's first competition ever and he showed up with style taking a submission and the gold medal!

Mike Leary is the head instructor of NWJJA's youth classes which meet at 4:30 every Tuesday and Thursday, and then Saturday mornings at 9am at 942 N. 95th here in Seattle, WA.  Mike is a loyal and dedicated brown belt under Brian Johnson, and he not only teaches techniques, but conveys those principles and qualities in everything he does as a father, coach, friend, and husband.  Here is what coach Leary posted about Max:

"Max McCrackin gets the gold at his first BJJ tournament in Seattle Wa. He has been a dedicated student training 3 days a week for about 2 years at the Northwest Jiu Jitsu Academy. When he first started Jiu Jitsu he was very shy and at times the target of bullies at school. His parents Steven and Maria felt that he needed to learn an effective form of self defense. So they brought him to the Northwest Jiu Jitsu Academy owned and operated by 2nd degree Machado Black Belt Brian Johnson. Brians youth instructor and Brown Belt Mike Leary has been working with and coaching several seattle youths for the last 2 years."

One of the best things about this video clip is that Coach Mike added subtitles explaining what you are watching.  An excellent breakdown of BJJ!

Enjoy, and congrats Max!  Proud of you!

"Move What You Can. Not What You Want" - A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Seminar Review of John Will

A seminar by John Will is really more of what I would call an event due to the fact that I always walk away  with so much more then just new ways to choke someone out (though we learned a number of those as well).  Hard to put into words with a hazy head but John's yearly visit to the Emerald City is a refreshing reminder to myself to constantly be looking at the martial arts in the broad spectrum.  How can I apply the principles on the mat in my everyday life?  The monicker "The Coaches Coach" is fitting on many different levels.

We started the seminar off with a lesson on Osoto-gari and several ways to set it up.  Using this as a warm up gave John the chance to discuss the importance of having some fundamental take downs with the gi.  Then we spent the majority of the day working on the crucifix, where John showed us several ways to enter into the crucifix position, and then showed us a handful of submissions depending on where your opponents arm is in conjunction to your body.  This is my... seventh John Will seminar I believe and a common theme is his "Hour Glass" approach to teaching.  That is, working one position (that is the center of the hour glass) with a number of ways to get into into, and then a number of ways to finish/transition out of it (those are the top and bottom of the hour glass respectively).

As per usual the lessons were awesome!  Peppered with stories of when John was learning crucifix position in the jungles of Brazil with the Machado brothers, Renzo Gracie, and some of the Gracie family, we were taught a number of different submissions and finishes for MMA/BJJ/ or Self Defense.  But what was the real lesson?  For me...

"Jiu Jitsu is like a puzzle that you have to figure out." - John Will.  He spoke about how he believes BJJ is different then other martial arts... it encourages and engages analytical thinking in a physical realm.  "When escaping move what you can, not what you want."  I mean how many different problems in daily life could you apply such advice too?  We get all too focused on one aspect, yet so many other aspects of our life are free and open and positive.  John Will teaches a way of thinking, a method of learning if you will, where the technique that is taught becomes secondary (at least to me) and the way in which to analyze a position... a submission... a technique.  That is the true lesson.  So much to think of with just a few hours on the mat with one of BJJ's sharpest minds!  Many "teach," John Will truly "coaches!"

And we cannot forget to mention that 4th degree black belt David Meyer is also in attendance helping out where need be.  David and John are friends from before time itself and David always makes it to any event John does to help out.  An added bonus for those of us sticking around after the seminar... rolling with a legend!  What a great day!  Thanks to the 30 in attendance and especially our coach Brian Johnson!

Cheers
Jake

2013 Mundials... The World Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships

I sit here typing three days (Friday at 4:45 to be exact) out from what promises to be the biggest, toughest, most challenging tournament I have ever entered; the Mundials, AKA the Worlds!  Considered by most in BJJ circles to be the pinnacle of tournaments, the Mundials pit the best of the best against each other with no age restrictions.  I have wanted to compete at this level for years and figured I am not getting any younger, and most likely by next year I will be a fresh brown belt, so this was my opportunity to test myself and fight on the biggest stage out there for BJJ.

I have been through a LOT in the last year or two, and I look at the preparation for this tournament as my therapy, my church, my zen meditation if you will.  I do not feel right if I miss rolling for a day or two.  Setting a goal such as the worlds puts ones game into perspective and offers an opportunity not only to test oneself, but to really hone ones specific skills.  Regardless the outcome Friday evening my training has been a huge success!  I truly feel like I have a game plan and I have the confidence to impose it!  I am excited to test it out on my opponents as I never have felt so well prepared.

And I owe a lot of that confidence to my training partners.  Much thanks goes out in helping with preparation for this, but especially Shadow, Denise, Scrappy, Motorcycle Matt, Kamau, Big John, and the others who put in extra time and training.  Also a big thanks to my coach who is much more then just my coach.  Brian, I hope to represent the academy, and the Machado family strongly at the Worlds.  May my luck with tournaments that contain the word "world" in them continue.

I am honored to be the first "official" representative fighting under the academy name "North West Jiu Jitsu Academy," as we just became an IBJJF recognized academy last month.  This is a great first step towards creating a world class team right here in the Pac NW!

I also want to thank my sponsor 1914 Kimonos  as I will be sporting there gi's this weekend.  Also a shout out to Arm Bar Soap Co.  and my bud Chad (hit me up at the worlds bro!), and also to Cooper Foto who will be doing dedicated coverage of my fights where I will offer up a review of his excellent services.  For those of us whom fight, there is no better coverage you can ask for then John Cooper and his staff.  Just wait to see the great shots!

For those die hard fans you can tune in online for full coverage of the entire tournament at IBJJFTV.COM!

Hey if you see me at the Mundials stop and say "Hi!"  I am the big bald dude, purple belt, with a silly grin the whole time I am sure!

Cheers, and best of luck to everyone fighting this week!
Jake
