Bodywork and Sports Massage Therapist Kurt Dery at Athenaroma

I wanted to take a moment to send a shout out to the best massage therapist in Washington state, and one of the best I have ever had work on me; Kurt Dery (LMT#MA00019958) at Athenaroma here in downtown Seattle.  Kurt's understanding of Anatomy and Physiology is second to none which only enhances what seems to be an innate ability to find the SOURCE of your pain and eliminate it.

I know a number of local martial artists, MMA fighters, and other combat sports participants view this blog from time to time, and if you are in need of a massage or need some help rehabbing an injury to get you back in the fight quicker Kurt is your man.

You can book online or call:  206-919-3404 / 212 Belmont Ave E. Seattle, WA.

NWOS Fall Show & Sale Nov. 7-8th

Come visit the NW Orchid Society's annual Fall Show & Sale at Swanson's Nursery November 7-8th 2015.   Here is an excellent opportunity to get ahold of some species and rare genetics for my orchid friends in the Pac NW.  There will be at least five vendors including Seattle Orchid, Emerald City Orchids, Lucky Girl Orchids, and Ahtanum Orchids.  Talks will be offered as well as AOS judging on Saturday morning.  Come join us...(Click here for more info)
Neofinetia fulcata

Swanson's Nursery
9701 15th Ave NW
Seattle WA, 98117
Saturday 9-5
Sunday 10-4

And for those of you scratching your heads wondering what orchids could possibly have to do with martial arts and this blog... well besides being a passion of mine, Neofinetia falcata are known as "Wind" or "Samurai" orchids because they were coveted by the warrior class of feudal Japan since the 1600's.  Shogun Tokugawa fell in love with the plant and is rumored to have sent samurai to all corners of Japan in search of rare specimens.  Often carried in protective cages, if commoners were to even breathe on the plant they risked beheading!

Rest assured we will not behead anyone for breathing on any orchids, unless of course you are rocking halitosis!

Nine Year Itch

09 No Gi Worlds L-R: Dave Meyer / BJJ / JAB
Nine years ago on today's date I started my formal Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training under Brian Johnson at the NW Jiu Jitsu Academy.  I am grateful he accepted my big goofy ass as a student, and it would be the understatement of the decade to say I have learned countless lessons both on and off the mat from Brian.  For that I am thankful.  I look forward to nine more years sharing the mat!

Rener Gracie Returns to the PAC NW

In general I find it hard to get impressed with the overwhelming majority of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminars and what they have to offer.  One of the shining exceptions to that feeling is anything by Rener Gracie, and to see him returning to the Seattle area this May with all new material is awesome!!  Surely not something you want to miss out on.

2015 Year of Flow

Happy New Years!  I wanted to take a moment and thank all of you who are once again tuning in to the Ground Never Misses for yet another trip around the sun.  This year on both a private level as well as a martial level, I plan to focus on one concept: flow.  In Kali it is referred to as Sayaw, and many a teacher will judge or grade you on how smooth your Sayaw is.

I hope not only to improve my fluidity in Kali, but I am also looking to flow a bit more in all aspects of my life.  In return I hope some fortune flows my way to help out with the debt and other lifely monkeys.

Here are two of my brothers from Detroit Kali showcasing some smooth Sayaw:

Insights Training Center Review

One may ask why we are discussing a gun based training course on a martial arts blog?  Well I am of the humble opinion that a a true martial artist is well rounded and has at the very least a base working knowledge of all forms of combat be it via a wristlock, or how to handle a pistol.  I will not jump on my political soapbox here, but I have a firm belief that if every child was raised with the knowledge, respect, and honor of a responsible gun owner (as are most gun owners) then we would witness far fewer gun deaths on both sides of the badge.

Last month my student and I decided to take the Multi State Concealed Carry Course, at Insights Training Canter in Everett, WA. as an opportunity to gain knowledge about the law and legalities of concealed carry throughout the United States.  A 4.5 hour course designed to give the participant and better understanding of the responsibilities and legalities of carrying a concealed weapon.  One of the best things about this course was the constant reminder of the toll, both financial and emotional/psychological, that choosing to engage someone with your weapon will take.

The instructor Alan Hines was nothing short of excellent.  A solid combination of experience, honestly, and humor to make the 4.5 hour class fly by.  Alan answered questions quickly and honestly, and presented us with challenging situations in various scenarios.  Even with 15 minutes to think and discuss, we couldn't come up with a definitive answer as to what to do.  Alan chimed in with a stark reminder, "You would have to react in about 2 seconds to be effective."

Overall the learning atmosphere and overall experience with Insights is certainly something I would suggest for anyone interested in furthering there martial knowledge base.  They offer a bevy of courses including self defense, first aid, as well as a full array of LEO based classes.  And if you sign up today only for any scheduled class you will receive 20% off!  Call Jenna 1-888-958-0884 right now!

My one and only criticism of Insights is that many of the courses are quite cost prohibitive to your average Joe and Jane.  Standard course fee's are $400-500 which is not bade, but when coupled with the need for 1000 rounds of ammo, that can quickly become a $1200 weekend!  I hope perhaps in the future they will take into consideration how costly such training is and make it more accessible to middle to low income families that could still benefit from such professional training.

Training With Guru Jeff Davidson

Once again I have had the distinct pleasure to train with Guru Jeff Davidson of the Detroit Maphilindo Pitbulls.  I believe all things happen for a reason and though I had followed his blog and online offerings for years, it wasn't until earlier this year I decided to reach out and ask to train with Jeff.  He accepted and as they say the rest is history.

I must admit that his tutelage comes at a very pivotal time for me as quality people in general but specifically quality martial artists have become a rare commodity in my life.  Guru Jeff sees something in me that others choose to look past, most likely because they are too preoccupied with trying to get something from me.  Regardless I cannot express in words how grateful I am to have such a talented and giving teacher both in the martial realm and spiritual.

As if the gift of having a solid teacher was not enough imagine my surprise when Guru Jeff offered to accept both my student Lara and myself as closed door disciples!  We could not be more honored and grateful for such a wonderful opportunity and thankfully we were both accepted.  Many more great things coming in the future!

Brian "Mr. BJJ" Johnson - 3rd Degree Black Belt

As you can see, both were overwhelmed with joy!
Owner and head instructor Brian Johnson of Seattle's NW Jiu Jitsu Academy was awarded his 3rd degree on Saturday October 25th 2014 by Professor Rigan Machado.  Congrats on a life dedicated to the arts and guiding others on one of the most difficult paths one can walk.  Nine years a black belt and over 25 years dedicated to the martial arts!

A Word of Gratitude to Guru Jeff Davidson

Here I sit well over 36 hours after a stellar weekend of training under the sharp eye of Guru Jeff Davidson, and my head is still reeling from the deluge of information!  I have been doing martial arts for well over 23 years and it is admittedly sometimes a bitter road to walk in terms of trying to find the right guidance and instruction regardless of style.  In the FMA it can often times lead to a lifetime of inaccurate details, strange power trips, and/or untested theories taught as fact (a dangerous ego stroke when weapons are involved).  My point is to find a good teacher is tough.  To find a great teacher is damned near impossible!

I will write a more detailed review later when I get some time, but I wanted to take this moment to publicly thank Jeff for accepting me as a student, his patient teaching, and the willingness to take a newbie and build from the beginning.  After sifting through so much bullshit and assholes in the FMA I am happy to find a teacher whose pragmatic approach is shadowed only by his willingness and openness to share his understanding of these beautiful arts.

We spent the weekend training Kali along with a cursory introduction to Yorba martial training from West Africa.  All of it was absolutely engaging and fascinating, we can't wait to get back on the mats with Guru Jeff.  Here is what a couple of attendees had to say:

"This weekend seminar was organized perfectly to start with a basic foundation on which everything else was built upon.  Moreover everything was taught, explained, and reviewed in a pragmatic fashion (ah...so that's why I do it like this)." - Mike

"When you first meet Guru Jeff Davidson, his brusque voice may make you think that he's a stiff-lipped sort of guy, but it's not long before you realize that not only is he very knowledgeable but he's got a great, dry sense of humor, is amazingly patient, and knows how to effectively break down the material in a way that you can actually understand it instead of just regurgitating patterns. In some martial arts seminars/workshops you'll find instructors that are frustrated when you don't learn something the first time and sometimes you'll find instructors just blaze through the material even if it's an "all levels" seminar. Not so with Guru Jeff - his pace kept me interested and effectively challenged and was more than willing to give us the time necessary with the more complicated tactics. I'm really glad that I was able to train with him and I look forward to learning more from his years of experience." - Elton P.

And to close here is a short clip from what Guru Jeff had to say on his blog Balisong Player (which should be on your daily check list):
"Well, I took these guys (and girl) in one weekend through material that would typically take me three months to cover with beginning students here in my own school – and they worked hard and diligently through every minute of it!  Invariably when I teach seminars like this, I always notice the point when students ‘cash-out’ mentally from overload.  I’m quite surprised and happy to say that these good folks worked doggedly through everything I gave them with 100% concentration and effort at all times – and then asked for a review on the second day! (at which point I myself was close to cashing out – lol).  Such students are the hallmark of a good Teacher, so kudos to Jake once again.
To our new group in Seattle: thank you all for a wonderful weekend of training and camaraderie.  I hope there will many, many more to come.  Most of all, thank you for appreciating the true depth and richness of our beloved Art of Kali." To read his entire post please click here!

Cannot thank you enough Jeff!  I will be seeing you in a few weeks to brush up and clean up what I am sure I will forget!

Cheers
Jake

Seattle International Open

The IBJJF just announced that Seattle (technically Everett) will be the next city it invades!  October 25th is the date for the IBJJF's first visit to the Evergreen state, and though I do not know why it is considered "international" fighters should expect players from throughout the Pacific NW and western Canada since this neck of the woods has been untouched by IBJJF thus far.

If you are still supporting this organization, mark the date, read up on the recent rule changes, and work on your guard game.

Brian Johnson Featured on Jiu Jitsu Olympics Blog

Jared Loper over at the blog Jiu Jitsu Olympics stopped into NW Jiu Jitsu Academy the other night and wrote up a short review of our academy and coach Brian J. Johnson.  A blue belt from Idaho, Jared was kind enough to drop in on his visit to Seattle which is always the case with out of town guests as all are welcome to our dojo.

"Some great competitors struggle with teaching. Brian is not one of those people. He explains complex techniques very simply, and his students reflect his skills and abilities."  Click here to read the entire review.

Positional Studies with BJJ Scout - Bicep Ride

Scout has been down and out with an injury, but he is back with a vengeance including his latest venture... a series of breakdowns on Positional Studies, the most recent being 'Bicep Ride.'  As always BJJ Scout breaks down grappling into bite sized morsels that are easy for us to chew regardless of rank and experience.  The more experience one has the more they can digest.

You will also notice a nice little shout out at the beginning (10 second mark) of the video for Brian Johnson's "B-12 BJJ Curriculum" so please do us a favor and help spread the word via Scout's video. Not so coincidentally many of the principles Scout is breaking down are taught in Brian's fundamental curriculum!
